Some homes are designed once and finished. This one is different. Over fifteen years and five distinct phases, this beloved lakeside residence on Silver Lake in Traverse City has evolved through a process that mirrors the family itself: growing, deepening, and becoming more fully itself with each passing season.

What began as a kitchen renovation has grown into something rarer: a whole-home reimagining, guided by a consistent design intelligence and an intimate understanding of how this family lives. Jenna Reed Walker, founder of Reed Walker Design Collective, has been the designer across every phase of this project, first under her earlier practice and now through the Collective. That continuity is not incidental. It is the reason the home feels so cohesive, so contextual, so earned, so completely theirs.

Phase I: The Kitchen

The kitchen renovation set the tone for everything that followed. Rich cherry cabinetry with clean shaker profiles grounds the space with warmth and craftsmanship. Stone countertops and a mosaic glass tile backsplash in earth tones and jewel accents bring quiet complexity to the surfaces, catching the northern Michigan light as it shifts through the day. Custom pendant lighting, a built-in beverage refrigerator, and a dedicated wine rack above the cabinetry reflect how this family actually uses the space: generously, and with an ease that comes from thoughtful planning. The breakfast nook features a custom, hand carved solid granite table, which required structural reinforcement. The kitchen did not just become more functional. It became a room worth lingering in.

Phase II: Lower Level Walkout Renovation

The lower level transformation is where the home's character announced itself most boldly. A fieldstone fireplace surround, built around a direct vent gas insert, anchors the family room with the kind of weight that can only come from natural material. River stone runs from fireplace to bar, creating a material thread that ties the gathering spaces together and with the lakeshore beyond. A curved stone bar with recycled glass terrazzo countertop and custom mosaic penny tile backsplash became the centerpiece of the entertainment zone, flanked by pendant lighting and open glass shelving. Built-in upholstered bench seating, a wine storage wall with integrated display niche and accent lighting, and a powder room with a sculptural glass vessel sink and bubble glass pendant fixtures complete the level. The lower walkout, with direct access to the lake beyond, was designed for the way this family hosts: casually, warmly, and well.

Phase III: Laundry Room and Mudroom

When the family was ready to address the back-of-house spaces, the design challenge was clear: create rooms that work hard without looking like they do. The result is a laundry and mudroom that feel as considered as any room in the home. Deep green cabinetry grounds the space, paired with a botanical wallcovering. Clean countertops, a white washed subway tile backsplash, and oil rubbed bronze fixtures complete a palette that is both practical and genuinely beautiful. Custom open shelving with warm wood accents, integrated hamper storage below the counter, and a hanging rod tucked under the upper cabinetry reflect the detailed spatial thinking that makes these rooms a pleasure to use every day.

Phase IV: Exterior Facade, Deck, and Tiki Bar

The exterior work brought the home's interior character outside. The original siding was replaced with stone and Hardie Board, and craftsman wood details were added. The terraced lakeside grounds were reimagined with layered stone retaining walls, native plantings, and a generous sandy beach area that steps down to the water's edge. The result, visible from both land and lake, reads as something that has always belonged here: stone and water and sky in quiet conversation. A deck expansion and tiki bar brought new life to the outdoor entertaining zone, creating a gathering place that earns its place against the backdrop of one of northern Michigan's most beautiful inland lakes.

Phase V: Whole Second Floor and Main Level Renovation (Currently Under Construction)

The current phase is the most comprehensive yet. Working from full construction documents produced under Reed Walker Design Collective, the renovation addresses the vaulted great room, primary suite, primary bathroom, master closet, guest bedrooms, guest bath, home office, formal dining room, and the feature staircase connecting the two floors.

The great room, with its soaring ceiling and open connection to the balcony above, is being transformed with a new overgrouted prefab stone fireplace surround and hearth, custom built-in millwork flanking the fireplace wall, new wood flooring throughout, and a ceiling treatment that anchors the volume while honoring the architecture. A hinged bookshelf door conceals the media storage nook, a detail that rewards the curious and keeps the room looking clean.

The home office receives custom built-in millwork across three walls, a window seat, and a dramatic bronze paint color drench, creating a room that functions as both a focused workspace and a retreat with views.

The primary suite and primary bath represent the most personal investment of the project. The bathroom is being fully transformed: a new freestanding tub, walk-in shower with custom tile and built-in bench, double vanity with furniture-style cabinetry, and a material palette that draws from the lake's colors and the home's established warmth. The guest bath receives a complete renovation in parallel, ensuring that hospitality extends to every corner of the home. The primary suite received a new fireplace and built-in millwork to anchor the space. The primary closet is updated to maximize storage and display.

The feature stair, which connects the main entry to the second floor, is being reimagined with new wood risers and treads, iron balusters, and refreshed newel posts, becoming the connective thread between every phase of this project.

Throughout the renovation, a light and grounded palette anchors the spaces: warm white walls, natural wood flooring, custom millwork in tones that echo the cabinetry carried through from the kitchen and lower level. Decorative lighting is selected to complement the architecture and bring focus to moments that matter. The effect is a home that feels lifted without feeling fussy, personal without being precious. Elements from previous renovations, including paint color and light fixtures are replaced as simple and cost effective upgrades to reflect the homeowners’ changing style.

This is what it looks like when a family trusts a designer over time. Not a single dramatic reveal, but a slow and deliberate becoming. Phase by phase, room by room, a home grows into something that could not have been imagined all at once, but makes complete sense in retrospect.

Deeply rooted. Quietly refined. Undeniably personal.
